What is DeMolay?
DeMolay is an organization dedicated to preparing young men to lead successful, happy, and productive lives. Basing its approach on timeless principles and practical, hands-on experience, DeMolay opens doors for young men aged 12 to 21 by developing the civic awareness, personal responsibility and leadership skills so vitally needed in society today. DeMolay combines this serious mission with a fun approach that builds important bonds of friendship among members in more than 1,000 chapters worldwide.
The Order of DeMolay was founded by Frank Sherman Land on March 18, 1919 at Kansas City, Missouri. Taking the namesake of the martyr and last Grand Master of the Knight Templars, Jacques DeMolay, for young men to emulate his virtues of fealty to his oath and fidelity towards his Order and brethren. Conceived by and born under the care and guidance of an illustrious Mason, the Order of DeMolay became part and remains under the able stewardship of the great Masonic fraternity. From the original Nine young men who became the first DeMolays, membership in the Order of DeMolay has now reached millions around the world and boasts a roll of distinguished alumni that includes Walt Disney, John Wayne, Walter Cronkite, John Steinbeck, former US President Bill Clinton and many others.
The Philippines takes pride in being first to establish a DeMolay Chapter in Asia - the Jose Abad Santos Chapter, which was established in March 23, 1946. Today there are more than 70 DeMolay Chapters all over the country existing under the auspicies of the Supreme Council of the Order of DeMolay of the Republic of the Philippines. Philippine DeMolay has also its share of DeMolay alumni excelling in their chosen fields like the award winning film directors Joel Lamangan and Ben Cervantes, Mayors Jejomar Binay and Nepthali Gonzales Jr, Eli Buendia of the erstwhile Eraserheads band, Luke Mejares of the South Border Band, just to name a few.
